In terms of size, the Subaru Outback which is a midsize crossover, is 8.7 inches longer and 1.5 inches wider than the Subaru Forester which is considered a compact crossover. Performance

Both models offer a standard 2.5-Liter engine, allowing them to churn out about 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. The Outback is slightly more efficient, both vehicles achieve about 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. If you're looking to tow boats or trailers with your vehicle, keep in mind that the Outback offers a towing capacity of 2700 pounds, while the Forester can only tow up to 1500 pounds.

Price

Expect a starting MSRP for comparably equipped models to be $24,995 for the Outback, which puts it slightly higher than the Forester which at $22,395. This accounts for the Outback's slightly larger size and more impressive towing capacity.
